Operating conditions and field reliability: what is proven, what needs your plantation

Plantation owners ask what happens when signal, weather or equipment fails. This page separates what independent studies report, what the product specifications state, and what must be validated on your site.

Short answer

How do the machines cope with signal loss, weather and failures?

Short answer

Some conditions have published evidence (navigation without satellite signal, a LoRa network in a rubber forest, postponing tapping in rain). Others are product specifications for tree-mounted machines. Everything else, including wind, typhoon, blocked roads, offline operation and failure recovery, requires project validation and is not claimed here.

Unified table

What is proven, specified or still to be validated in each condition?

Weak GNSS (GPS/BeiDou) signalMulti-sensor fusion positioning was field-tested in a Danzhou rubber forest with heavy tree occlusion and unstable GNSS[6]; navigation studies in rubber forests[2]Tree-mounted machine stays on its tree and needs no navigationMobile robot navigation on your own plantation
No GNSS signal at allA 2026 field test used 3D LiDAR SLAM with QR-tag localization (GNSS-denied navigation)[1]; LiDAR-IMU-odometry positioning without satellites[2]—Complete task (leave base, find trees, tap, return) with satellite positioning off, on your site
No 4G/5GHybrid mesh-star LoRa network of fixed machines in a Danzhou rubber forest: average communication failure rate 0.6% in normal and rainy weather[3]Local LoRa group control; individual machines need no 4G/5G; one gateway serves up to 500 machines; call-through rate above 99%Mobile robot communication arrangement per model
No internet at all—Local LoRa group control does not need public 4G/5G on each machine; remote viewing and control need the on-site controller to have internet accessOffline execution, logging and re-synchronisation: Project validation required / agreed per project
Pre-dawn operationA 2026 field comparison started tapping at 2 a.m., every third day[1]Mobile robot is positioned for night operation; tree-mounted machine taps on a preset programScheduled start, supervision requirements and failure handling: Project validation required / agreed per project
Rain and after rainTapping was postponed in case of rain in the 2026 field comparison[1]; an official notice advises rain guards with a tight seal before the rainy season and suspending tapping on heavily affected stands[5]; a raindrop-sensor bowl cover closed successfully about 95% of the time (collection bowl only)[7]—Conditions for stopping and criteria for resuming tapping, agreed with your tapping system
Strong wind, thunderstorm, typhoon——Shutdown, shelter, return-to-base and post-storm inspection: Project validation required / agreed per project
Road interruption——Whether the machine stops by itself and what manual intervention is needed: Project validation required / agreed per project
Equipment failure—Blade life up to about 500 cuts between sharpenings; twice-yearly adjustment is a negotiable maintenance arrangement, not a standard for all modelsMissed cuts, make-up tapping and repair arrangements: Project validation required / agreed per project

A dash means we have no verified information to publish. Published studies report the authors' own results for the machines tested; they are not product guarantees. Fixed-machine evidence does not apply to mobile robots.

Rain

Why does the page not say whether a machine can tap in the rain?

Whether tapping is possible in rain is not judged from a waterproof (IP) rating alone. Whether a machine suits your plantation must be confirmed against your local tapping system, climate and the specific model. The only mobile-robot field comparison we cite postponed tapping in case of rain[1].

Your plantation

Will it work on my plantation?

Whether a machine is suitable for your plantation must be confirmed against local operating practice, climate and the specific model. Rain-day tapping is not judged from waterproof rating alone.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a rubber tapping robot work without GPS?

Published field work reports navigation without satellite positioning (3D LiDAR SLAM with QR tags). Whether it holds on your plantation needs to be validated; see the dedicated page. [1]

Does it need 4G/5G?

Tree-mounted machines are controlled over a local LoRa network and each machine needs no 4G/5G (product specification). Remote access needs internet at the on-site controller.

Can it tap in the rain?

There is no blanket answer. Published work postponed tapping in rain, and suitability depends on your tapping system, climate and model; this is not decided from an IP rating alone.
